Finishing up the Feed Reader

November 5, 2009

It’s clear! I’ve read it all! And with a cat sleeping on my keyboard so I can’t type without hitting her ear (got to love helpful cats). So here goes, with two stories from a variety of blogs this time – one about WAR and one about LotRO:

A lot’s been written about the new WAR free trial, taking out the 10 day restriction and just opening up Tier 1 for free play. WAR is a game that will always be close to my heart and I would definitely boot it up sometime post-Mirkwood and play through some Nordenwatch for old time’s sake. I hope it gets them some extra subs, and going streaming is great too. Of course, it’s not ALL good news, because apparently GOA hasn’t announced a similar scheme yet.

When we were writing The Book of Grudges back in the day, it always frustrated me how much of my time I had to spend talking about the differences between the EU and US experience for players. I thought I’d dropped that as a topic when I switched to a more generic blog, but now it’s raised its ugly head for me in LotRO. Turbine run and develop the game in the US. Codemasters run it in Europe. In terms of server stability and even my own personal experience with GMs, I have no problem with the Codemasters service. But, it did take an age to get EU players access to the Lorebook for editing purposes (a bit of a smokescreen I have to say and one I never got behind, because I think the Lorebook is pretty pointless).

But with the my.lotro service, Turbine has finally produced something related to the game that I am actually jealous of, and which I’m mad at both Turbine and Codemasters for not extending to the EU players. So now to the links, right? Well, both Casual Stroll to Mordor and Doc Holiday talk about the new class-specific lotteries being held on my.lotro at the moment. And this follows some more generic lotteries. It sounds fun, it sounds community-building, and we don’t get it. Grr.

(Spinks just asked if I’d pick an EU service again. It’s looking less and less tempting with each game with a split in service).

Hi ho, Hi ho…

October 16, 2009

Overtime for me at work, which excuses the current tranche of quiet on the blog.  And so.. a bit of random is good for the soul:

First – go to A Casual Stroll to Mordor and read their Harvest Festival guide. I am a known hater of in-game festivals, but even I did a few of the festival quests last night, while waiting to kill the Evil Turtle of Moria (hrrm, I wonder if he was corrupted by The Watcher living so close by).

We’re raiding tonight, I’m working tomorrow also – should make for some interesting times… hope there’s something easy to cook for dinner!

Too many TV shows at the moment, now trying to work out my favoured order for watching them. I may share it one day, but let’s just say Supernatural is right up there right now!

Diesel still has a limp, is still on full meds even though it was supposed to be quite a bit better by now. Calling vet today to make another appt for next week. Knowing there’s nothing they can do vs. wanting him to be 100% again. Grr.

Codemasters say their cake contest is just waiting on winner contact etc now, so we should see the prize-winners soon. Imagine this means I didn’t win and all my efforts to learn how to decorate cakes will be shelved for another 20-odd years. I wanted to support the contest, but I think perhaps I will steer clear of artistic ones in the future ;p They are very nice about sending postcards to runners-up though! And who knows, eh?

Things are more hectic than I’d like right now. C’est tout.

Quick thought before work

October 10, 2009

I want the EU Siege of Mirkwood pre-order offers as much as the next LotRO player in the EU. I’m impatient, as many MMO players…

Let’s face it, I’ll buy it whatever. And I only REALLY need to know in time to pre-order and download it before it goes live. More interested in dates than the offering to be honest anyway, mostly so me and my friends can plan our time well.

LotRO update

October 6, 2009

I’ve had some important chats with some people. Cryptic, but it cleared some air and made a few things better.

We killed the Watcher for the first time last night, on 3rd attempt I think. I had a few problems with the first attempt, so that fail was pretty much my fault and solved the next time around by some tweaking. Felt good to get him down. Not as good as Balrog, but we’d probably invested more in the Balrog. But in terms of killing a ‘big bad’ and avenging Bill the Pony, it felt good.

We’re spending more time with the Blind One in DN (I don’t think he’s truly blind), I feel we’re on the verge of cracking it, but just depends how long the other bosses take us to kill and how tired we are by the time we get there. DN doesn’t feel as fun as the Rift and while I could probably justify why in some aspects, I’m not sure about others. Still, we’re progressing and even pre-BO fights are getting smoother and faster.

I saw a dwarf called Bling which made me laugh – even on the RP server. Mostly because we already joke about one of our dwarves and his bling!

And we’re still waiting on Codemasters telling us the pre-order offers for Siege of Mirkwood.

And more importantly, announcing the winner of their cake comp. I don’t really make good cakes, so entering took a lot of effort on my part. I’d be lucky if I came in 5th though, but I just want to KNOW. They said the winner would be announced on 2nd Oct. And each delay makes me think I MAY have won. Finally got enough emblems to trade in for 1st Age weapons, spent them on friends. Felt good, since that’s the way I got my 1st Age Greatsword. Also got a rocking Captain’s Emblem from Hall of Crafting this week. It’ll be hard to beat and only misses the Focus buff (which I have on another I can switch in).

So it’s been a good week for raid progress, and loot for me, and a bad week for announcements. The Codemasters billing page is going down today at 9am, so maybe that’s the sign we’ll hear soon. But Satine has already said we do not have the same offers are the US. So we’ll see what happens there. Might give me something to blog about, eh!

We’re off to Mirkwood

September 4, 2009

I don’t usually do wholesale cut & paste jobs, but here’s the Codemasters announcement of Siege of Mirkwood! No date, expect to hear about one during PAX after all, though. Sounds enough to keep my excitement levels up (except about tailoring!)

Siege of Mirkwood will expand the online world of Middle-earth where players will join forces to press further eastward into the dark, foreboding and treacherous forest of Mirkwood and take part in the epic conclusion to Volume II of The Lord of the Rings Online.

Siege of Mirkwood will be available as a digital download this autumn and provide players with an increased level cap, a new region including the legendary evil fortress of Dol Guldur, major enhancements to combat and Legendary Items and the introduction of Skirmishes, a new system where players will train customizable soldiers and take them into battle as part of the War of the Ring… [I cut out a quotation]

  • The Epic Conclusion to Volume II: Mines of Moria™ – Under the command of Celeborn and Galadriel, players will fight through vast armies of Orcs alongside the Elves of Lórien in a battle that will take them to Dol Guldur, the fortress of the Ringwraiths. This update includes Book 9 and the Epilogue to the sweeping epic tale begun with the award-winning Mines of Moria expansion.
  • Increased Level Cap — Players will be able to advance their characters up to level 65, gaining access to new traits, virtues, skills and class quests.
  • Join Epic Battles On Demand! — Jump into battle with the new Skirmish system. Skirmishes offer endless action in repeatable, randomized instances for up to 12 players. Create and lead your own army of customizable soldiers into battle, training them to greater skill as you earn victories against the forces of shadow. Stand and fight wherever violence erupts with the ‘World Join’ feature, which lets you and your friends band together to fight Skirmishes from anywhere in Middle-earth.
  • Take up Arms! – Infiltrate the dark jails, deadly arenas and savage stables of Dol Guldur, the fortress of the Ringwraiths, and strike a blow against Sauron’s forces in new 3 and 6-player instances. Call upon your fellows to adventure into the most deadly 12-player raid yet and face the ultimate challenge – the Nazgûl Lord!
  • Major Gameplay Enhancements – Turbine continues to improve the award-winning experience of LOTRO with major improvements to the combat and Legendary Items systems. Players will experience improved responsiveness when in the heat of battle. Players will also be able to create and craft their own customized Second and Third Age Legendary Items from raw materials and grow their weapons’ power to level 60. Achieve new Legacies, new titles, and a fourth Runic slot that will make Legendary Items even more unique and powerful.

Details of Codemasters Online’s exclusive European Siege of Mirkwood pre-order and package offerings will be made available soon.

And here’s the Turbine official site for the ‘expansion’.

Dreams Come True

July 6, 2009

Seriously, Lord of the Rings Online has just made a dream of mine come true – with a Design Your Own Horse contest. In what must surely be another sure sign that Rohan is the next expansion (as if there were any doubt), I’m really excited to see what fans make of the contest even though they say only the winner will appear in-game. Next we need Rohan announced with the customise-your-horse option and that’d just rock.

The closing date for both the US and EU contests is 28th July, with winners regaled on 18th (Codemasters) and 28th August (Turbine). Note these dates. The belief that Rohan will be announced sometime before the end of the summer fits in quite nicely with this horse-themed contest, so I think we’re looking at an announcement at the end of August now. With the European Games Developers Conference in mid-August and then PAX in the US in early September, it looks like we’re really honing in on a window of opportunity here. No idea how long from announcement to release, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was early next year. If it comes any sooner, I’ll be delighted, of course, and that would fit in with the hints of a level cap increase before the end of the year. So, let’s just sit back and enjoy the speculation ride!

I suck at art. Can someone mock up a nice Palomino with a tasteful blanket so I can pick that for my Captain in Rohan please?

NB: I originally saw the Codemasters’ announcement of the contest, here’s the Turbine link for those in America.
