Another Break

August 13, 2009

My father died the other day, am in London learning how to deal with this as a horribly adult thing to do. For a better sense of things, see Spinks’ post on it over at Spinksville.

Re-evaluating blogging, because let’s face it, I’m rubbish and Book of Grudges was really just a glitch, a chance for Hawley and Spinks to shine and me to do a lot of tag-adding!

I don’t have much to say anymore. So I may or may not return to it.

Will finish the Comic Con stuff, when I get home sometime next week.

But really.

I’m not sure Nerf the Cat is worth your RSS feeds!

  1. I’m very sorry for your loss.

  2. So sorry, hang in there and take care of you and yours!

  3. You don’t have to put out long posts twice a day to remain a valuable blogger. You have plenty of friends out in the blog-o-sphere who would be delighted to read anything you publish, no matter how infrequent or on what subject.

Anyway, I think it’s definitely a good idea to have a break and postpone any decisions for now.

    *hugs*

  4. I’m sorry for your loss. Anyone who complains about your posting frequency under the circumstances should be punted from the internets.

(Incidentally, one of the beauties of the RSS feed is that it doesn’t matter how often you post. You jump to the top of the list when you post stuff and aren’t bothering anyone when you’re not. I’ve still got a place for Book of Grudges on my blogroll, just in case it rises from the dead yet again. ;))

    • Book of Grudges gets more hits just on cute animals (but don’t tell anyone!)

  5. Nerf the Cat always has a place on Overly Positive’s feed.

Like I said over Twitter, all you need to keep writing is the personal enjoyment you get out of putting your thoughts to paper (or the internet, as it were). Readers (of which I think you have more than you think) will appreciate any kind of opinion as long as it resonates with their own interests.

I am deeply sorry for your loss, and agree with Unwize – hold off on any decisions, give yourself time to think, and come back refreshed.

  6. Sorry for your loss.

I jut wanted you to know that I value Nerf the Cat even though I just stumbled on it by accident through a LOTRO twitter search.

Even if the next post isn’t for 6 months I’m not unsubscribing.

    Take care of yourself.

  7. It’s been 15 years since my dad died and I still think about him everyday. I went to Liverpool for the first time last weekend and caught a LFC football match – something my dad would have loved to do with me but never did. I promised I’d take him, and carried a photo of him in my wallet.

Even though your dad may not be here physically you can keep his spirit alive, even with the smallest things.

    My best to your family.

  8. I’m very sorry to hear of your loss. I wish you and your family comfort in this hard time.

As to your blogging, it’s perfectly understandable to take a break right now, at a time of crisis. Just wait and see where things bring you after some time to deal with a very important real life situation.

    Hang in there.

  9. You do yourself an injustice when you underrate your writing ability so.

RSS makes quantity unimportant, quality is what counts, and you can craft a post of quality with the best of them.

I’m terribly sorry for your loss, such times are always a catalyst for a re-evaluation of one’s own life, but I certainly hope that when the healing process has begun to take effect, you will decide to come back to us.

    Take care.

  10. My condolences.

  11. I’m sorry for your loss Arbitrary. Take a break if you need it. It helps, I know. When you don’t *feel* like blogging, it becomes a chore. You’ll still be on my feed reader either way, so I hope you continue.

Again, I’m sorry to hear about your dad. Take care.

  12. That is very sad news indeed.

I lost my mum around 10 years ago, I still miss her naturally.

Take some time to find yourself, and don’t worry about the blog it will wait as long as you need it too if that is what you want. If not then no worries.

  13. My deepest condolences for your loss, I know how difficult it can be to lose a close family member.

As for your blogging, if you honestly do not wish to continue with it then you probably shouldn’t. If it isn’t bringing you happiness then there’s really no point to it. Certainly no one could possibly fault you for taking an extended hiatus following such terrible news.

If, on the other hand, you just think you’re not good enough then you need to realize that there are plenty of people, myself included, who check your site regularly in order to gain some enjoyment from your writing. You may not be generating much traffic but then again the sites that generate the most traffic do tend to either be flukes or have a very specific marketing objective as opposed to being devoted to contributing worthwhile content. I know my site doesn’t get much attention, but it doesn’t really bother me so long as someone is reading it and I’m having fun writing on it.

When I first stumbled onto your blog I immediately bookmarked it, and I’m usually rather stingy with my bookmarking. You’re not rubbish and Nerf The Cat is most definitely worthy of people’s RSS feeds (though I personally don’t make use of RSS) and so long as you continue to write your blog will always have a place on my own site’s blogroll. Just take some time to recover from your loss or at least find what solace you possibly can before unjustly denigrating your ability.
